CELANESE MATERIALS INNOVATION POWERS TWO SPE® AUTOMOTIVE INNOVATION AWARD WINNERS
Celanese Santoprene® TPV and POM ECO-C, made with captured CO2, enable award-winning innovation and circularity in automotive applications
Celanese Corporation (NYSE: CE), a global specialty materials and chemical company, today announced that two applications developed with Celanese materials technology and application development expertise received top honors in two categories at the 55th annual SPE® Automotive Innovation Awards Gala, held November 4th in Livonia, Michigan.
The SPE® Automotive Innovation Awards honor advances in vehicle design, engineering, manufacturing and sustainability. This year’s winners – a fully thermoplastic body door seal and a fuel delivery module made with an engineering polymer derived from captured CO2 – were engineered by Celanese customers Cooper Standard and Aisan Industry for automakers Volvo Cars and Toyota.
The Process, Assembly & Enabling Technologies award was received for a body door seal engineered by Cooper Standard for Volvo Cars using Celanese Santoprene® thermoplastic vulcanizate. The fully thermoplastic design replaces conventional EPDM rubber and its metal carrier, cutting weight, simplifying manufacturing and increasing design flexibility without compromising sealing performance. By eliminating the mixed rubber-and-metal construction, the seal is easier to recycle, supporting more circular vehicle design.
The Sustainability award went to a fuel delivery module engineered by Aisan Industry for Toyota using Celanese POM ECO-C. The module uses a POM ECO-C grade with properties comparable to the conventional material, enabling a drop-in conversion without redesigning the part or changing molds or processing conditions. Using Carbon Capture and Utilization (CCU) technology, POM ECO-C converts captured CO2 into a high-performance engineering polymer, turning an industrial emission into a valuable feedstock while meeting the performance and reliability demands of fuel-system components. The approach reduces reliance on fossil-based feedstocks and can support customers’ requirements around increasing circular content in a diverse range of solutions.
“These awards reflect how Celanese combines materials technology, innovation and application development expertise with close collaboration across the automotive value chain,” said Todd Elliott, Senior Vice President, Engineered Materials, at Celanese. “Whether it is a thermoplastic seal that simplifies vehicle manufacturing or an engineering polymer made from captured CO2 and proven in a critical fuel system, our goal is to help our customers and their automaker partners create value through better performance, more efficient manufacturing and more circular materials as mobility evolves.”
Celanese materials were also featured in finalist applications, including a hidden rear wiper made with Santoprene® TPV and turbo air ducts made with Celanese PPS, underscoring the breadth of the company’s portfolio across vehicle systems.
